What Google Actually Looks for in 2026 (It's Not Keywords)
Google's algorithm processes over 200 ranking signals. Most of them are not keywords. Here's what actually moves the needle for South African business websites.
The keyword era — where stuffing your page with "best plumber Johannesburg" ten times would rank you — ended around 2013. Google's BERT and then Gemini language models can now understand intent, not just words. That changes everything about how you should approach content.
What Google rewards in 2026 is topical authority. If you run a refrigeration business and your website has 8 well-written articles about commercial refrigeration maintenance, cold room installation, and refrigerant gas compliance in South Africa, Google's algorithm understands you are genuinely expert in this space. One page with keywords is not authority. A body of relevant, interlinked content is.
Core Web Vitals are now a confirmed ranking factor. A faster site beats a slower site when all other factors are equal — and in local South African searches, these are often close enough that speed decides position.
Local signals matter more than most businesses realise. For SA searches, Google weighs your Google Business Profile heavily — category, reviews, post frequency, and proximity. A properly optimised GBP with consistent NAP data (Name, Address, Phone) across all directories is often the difference between appearing in the local 3-pack and being invisible to nearby searches.
Backlinks still matter, but the bar has changed. Ten relevant, high-quality backlinks from South African industry sites outperform 500 low-quality directory listings. Focus on earning links from local business associations, press coverage, and supplier directories — not paid link schemes.
What doesn't work: keyword stuffing, exact-match anchor text overuse, thin content pages, duplicate content across subdomain/www, hiding text, cloaking, AI-generated content without editorial review, and buying backlinks on Fiverr. Google's spam detection has never been more accurate.
