5 Signs Your Website Is Losing You Business Right Now
Most business owners don't know their website is actively costing them clients. These are the five warning signs to check today.
1. It loads slowly on mobile. More than 70% of South African internet traffic is mobile. Open your website on your phone using mobile data — not Wi-Fi. Count the seconds before you see meaningful content. If it's more than 3 seconds, you're losing visitors to competitors whose sites load instantly. Google PageSpeed Insights will give you a precise score.
2. It doesn't appear in Google Maps. Search for your type of business in your city. If you don't see yourself in the map results — the local 3-pack — you need a Google Business Profile, and you need it optimised. This is free real estate Google gives every business, and most local South African companies ignore it completely.
A Google Business Profile costs nothing to set up. It's the single highest-ROI action a local South African business can take online. And yet the majority of local businesses either don't have one or have one with incorrect information.
3. It has no clear call to action. What do you want visitors to do? If your homepage doesn't have an obvious WhatsApp button, phone number, or quote form above the fold, visitors arrive, don't know what to do, and leave. Every page needs one primary action — and for South African businesses, a direct WhatsApp link is the highest-converting option.
4. It isn't SSL / HTTPS. Click the address bar. If you see "Not secure" or no padlock, Google is actively labelling your site as potentially unsafe to users. Chrome shows this warning to every visitor. It also suppresses your ranking. SSL certificates are free — there's no excuse for this in 2026.
5. You can't find it on Google by searching your own services. Try searching "[your service] [your city]". If you're not on page 1 for your core services in your own city, potential clients searching for exactly what you do aren't finding you. This is an SEO problem and it can be fixed systematically.
